updated 1/1/99

Instructions. Discuss the following. Points will be awarded not only for a correct answer but how well your answer is supported by facts and material from lectures and readings.

  1. (10 points) How did the United become the "Great Slave Power?"
  2. (10 points) If Ulrich Phillips, Charles Ramsdell, and Harriet Beecher Stowe were to sit down to dinner what would they discuss?
  3. (10 points) Slaves in America were better off than Jews in nazi concentration camps. Discuss.
  4. (10 points) The Civil War had no effect on black's standard of living because in the postbellum South, blacks faced a harsh legal, political, and social system. Their condition as freedmen was not that different that their condition as slaves.
  5. (15 points) The Civil War was a waste and should never have been fought. There were other cheaper non-violet ways of ending slavery in the United States, slavery would probably have ended by itself, and there was no personal gain for white northerners in ending the system of slavery. (hint: discuss all three)
  6. (10 points) Explain the riddle. Slaves in the South had a higher material standard of living that free farmers in the North.
  7. (15 points) Consider the picture below. Does this drawing accurately depict American slavery. What are two things that correctly characterize U.S. slavery depicted in the picture and one thing that incorrectly characterizes U.S. slavery. Explain your answer.

Problem 2. Consider the text of Abraham Lincoln's first and second inaugural addresses.

  1. (10 points) Use what you have learned about the causes of the Civil War to explain the content of Lincoln's first inaugural address.
  2. (10 points) Use what you have learned about the causes of the Civil War to explain the content of Lincoln's second address.
