- (10 points) The Civil War had no effect on black's standard of living because in the
postbellum South, blacks faced a harsh legal, political, and social system. Their
condition as freedmen was not that different that their condition as slaves.
- (15 points) The Civil War was a waste and should never have been fought. There were
other cheaper non-violet ways of ending slavery in the United States, slavery would
probably have ended by itself, and there was no personal gain for white northerners in
ending the system of slavery. (hint: discuss all three)

living that free farmers in the North.
